About Us
The Team
At The Point, we believe that no ONE person makes up the church. Everyone who comes to our services and everyone who calls The Point “home” is a special part of The Point.
We believe that those of us that have a relationship with Jesus also have a unique connection with each other. From the Bible and by learning from Pointillism we see:
- Each one of us is unique (God’s workmanship),
- Each of us has a purpose; and each contributes to the Church body and the message (Great Commission to all)
- Each of us are a part that makes up the whole unit (without each person we are not whole). We are like a body where Jesus Christ is like the head and we are all the other parts held together, supporting each other, growing together, and building each other up in love “as each part does its work”. Eph. 4:14-16, Roman 12:3-8, 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 and Pointillism.
Victor and Candice
I’m Victor Thomas, the pastor at The Point. I was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2007 I got married to my wonderful wife Candice Thomas in our home town in South Africa. Shortly afterward we moved to Burnaby, BC to do a short-term research exchange at Simon Fraser University, on Urban Food Security in Southern African Cities.
Although we were both committed to returning to South Africa to assist with poverty issues there, God began to work in each of our hearts about the spiritual poverty surrounding us at the University and in the greater Vancouver. As we surrendered to God’s calling, He opened the door for me to assume the role of pastor / planter at The Point. Since then we have seen God do some great things at The Point.
We are continually burden to see individuals all over Metro Vancouver know what authentic spirituality looks like. To this end, we are beginning the process of paving the way for future church plants on and around campuses in Metro Vancouver.
What Is The Point?
The Point is to Love God.
To express our love and spur others towards loving and knowing God through worship, learning, and prayer. We believe one place to do this is at one of the weekly celebrations.
The Point is to Love People.
To be a place where it is okay to be unfinished, to support each other, to hold each other accountable, to have compassion and create connections. We believe one place to do this is at one of the weekly LifeGroups.
The Point is to Serve All.
To serve God, the church, the community, and the world, using the gifts that God has given us. We believe one of the ways to do this is by being involved in one of the Ministry Teams.
Therefore, The Point is to Love God through us drawing closer to Him, to Love people in community and to Serve all by build God’s Kingdom on earth and in Heaven.
What We Believe
In essential beliefs – we have unity.
“There is one Body and one Spirit…there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all…” Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)
In nonessential beliefs – we have liberty.
“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on disputable matters…Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls…So then each of us will give an account of himself to God…So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1,4,12,22 (NIV)
In all our beliefs – we show charity.
“…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains – but have no love, I am nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 (Ph)
The Essentials We Believe
The Bible is God’s authoritative word to us.
Jesus is the hope for all in this world.
The local church is God’s agent for redemptive change.
Every Christian is called and gifted by God to love and serve the church, their community and the world.
The Church is called to whole earth evangelism through demonstrating and proclaiming love to all.
If a detailed statement of faith is what you looking for please refer to the Statement of Faith.
History
The Point started as a church plant in November 2003. It was birthed by Church Planter Kelly Manire with a vision of reaching SFU Students for Christ. Over the years the church has been blessed by God and has made an impact on many individual’s lives. In September 2007 Victor and Candice Thomas were called as The Point’s first pastoral couple. The church has since begun two services, to most effectively reach all who live on and around Burnaby mountain. God has also shaped our vision, purpose, process: To Love God, Love People and Serve All.
